Optical Illusion on Fashion Design: Exploring the Cognition of Horizontal and Vertical Line Pattern

According to Helmholtz Illusion, a square composed of horizontal lines appears taller and narrower than an identical square made up of vertical lines. Thompson and Mikellidou (2009) have shown that human body is best revealed by horizontal lines, not vertical ones. Thus, the authors would like to know if the opinions would differ on the type of figures when people consider the effects of the stripe clothes on real human body. This study aims to investigate the influence of Helmholtz Illusion in dress patterns. Four types of models are recruited according to their body mass indexes and heights. Questionnaire subjects are asked to compare horizontal and vertical line outfits on the four types of models and tell which kind would look taller, look slender, be more figure flattering, and look better. The authors use the percentages and the chi-square tests to analyze data. The results show that the majority consider that people wearing vertical line outfit look slender than wearing horizontal one, but there are some different perceptions when the effects of figure types and sex are considered.
