Crossing Boundaries: A Case Study of Robert Wilson's Collaboration with Pop Culture on George Armani's Retrospective and Voom Portraits

Always on the front line of today's art industry, Robert Wilson has been recognized as one of the most innovative theatre directors and designers of our times. His dancing, painting, and architecture background has also made him an iconic crossover artist in performing art. His works not only represents his unique taste of arts, but are also amazingly blended with a variety of images and multiple forms of arts, including music, lighting, dancing, movement, sculpture and text. Other than theatrical plays, the project "George Armani's Retrospective" in Guggenheim Museum New York in 2000, as well as a series of video art works "Voom Portraits" in 2007, were two Robert Wilson's productions designed and implemented with the latest multimedia technology mixing up Art and Pop Culture, bringing brand new visions and experiences to the audience of these works installed with creative visual and audio design. As a result, "George Armani's Retrospective" and "Voom Portraits" are two cases selected for this research to reveal Robert Wilson's crossover background and his footprint of collaborating with Pop Culture. The analysis is based on the notion of Postdramatic theatre, established by German theatre researcher Hans-Thies Lehmann in his book "Postdramatic Theatre", to study the theatrical elements applied to these two cases, including the usage of scripts, stage design, sound, music, human body, space, time, media technology and so on. Exploring how Robert Wilson extended his marvelous ideas out of its boundary, making a perfect match of Pop Culture and Art.
