Time-out with Children while Doing Family: Displaying Family at and Commodification of Parent-Child Restaurants

Parenting families often share the experiences of "take children out", parent-child restaurants which combine food, leisure and facilities have become one of the best places for families. Is it just a family leisure or the extension of daily parenthood? In the context of the intensive motherhood of the neoliberal society, parents often choose parent-child restaurants based on their parenting scripts. In the parent-child restaurant, the behavior, facilities, forms and landscapes constitute the scenario of space, which responds to the need of parenting script. Through participant observation in parent-child restaurants and in-depth interviews with the owners and consumers in Kaohsiung and Pingtung, my research deals with the dynamic process of the interaction between parenting scripts and scenario of space in the context of parent-child restaurants, in order to understand the commercialization of “displaying family”. My research analyzes the spaces and behaviors in parent-child restaurants, which not only helps to deepen how "take the breath" can be supported by combinations of space and social conditions, but also explores the theoretical and practical study of displaying family. The research points out the wide influence on commercialization of childhood and parenting, and how parenting families feel anxious and excluded from unfriendly public urban spaces.
