The relationship between coenzyme Q10 status and insulin resistance, antioxidative capacity, and physical activity in athletes

Athletes may suffer from a higher level of oxidative stress due to long-term high-intensity training. Coenzyme Q10 is a good antioxidant that can scavenge free radicals to prevent cells from oxidative damage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between coenzyme Q10 status and insulin resistance, antioxidative capacity, and physical activity in athletes. This study was designed as an observational study. We recruited 43 well-training athletes and 25 healthy subjects for the control group. During the study, we collected subjects’ medical-related health history, physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ), and 3-day dietary records from the questionnaires. The values of anthropometry, hematological data, inflammation, glycemic parameters, antioxidative capacity, and coenzyme Q10 were measured in the study. The results show that athletes had a significantly lower level of white blood cell (WBC) coenzyme Q10 (p < 0.01); and a higher level of Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC, p < 0.01) than healthy subjects. In addition, coenzyme Q10 status was negatively correlated with fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin, and HOMA-IR; and positively correlated with QUICKI (p < 0.05) in athletes. With regard to antioxidant capacity, coenzyme Q10 status was positively correlated with antioxidant enzymes activity (catalase and glutathione peroxidase), serum TEAC, vitamin A, and vitamin E (p < 0.05). Regarding physical activity, coenzyme Q10 status was significantly correlated with MET-minutes/week at leisure-time and walking in athletes (p < 0.05). In conclusion, athletes showed lower levels of WBC coenzyme Q10 and insulin resistance; and a higher level of TEAC than healthy subjects. Coenzyme Q10 status was significantly negative associated with insulin resistance and positive associated with antioxidant capacity. Thus, evaluated coenzyme Q10 status in athletes might enhance their antioxidant capacity and insulin sensitivity.
