Using Mobile Phone to Decrease Medication Errors in the Elderly

Since mobile phone has gained popularity, it is common that everyone has a mobile phone with him or her in the developed countries. For a mobile phone, in addition to the basic speech communication features, many other features and services become necessary. A camera feature is one of these indispensable features. In another aspect, after the introduction of barcode, nearly all kinds of commodities are attached their bar-codes on the surface of their packages. Consumers can also take this advantage to identify the content of the commodities later after purchasing them. As getting older, taking medicines and nutriments have become an essential part of daily lives of the elderly. However, many reports suggested that 60% of the elderly patients failed to take their medication as prescribed. This greatly effects the well-being of the patients. But due to the decaying of their brain and eyesight, the elderly often encounter difficulties in identifying what medicine it is or how to use it. One of the reasons is because the name and description printed on the package are often too small to see clearly. This thesis focuses on creating a platform to help the elderly to utilize camera of their mobile phone devices to recognize medicines and nutriments more easily through barcodes. Based on the image processing technique to decode the barcode at first when the elderly get the medicine, they record the information about the name and description of the medicine to database. At last, the barcode number and the information will be linked together. Thereafter, the elderly can just scan the barcode to get the information of the medicine as long as the barcode is recognized. This greatly helps to fulfill medication adherence and decrease medication errors.
