The international society has its long historical origin in the preservation and rehabilitation of the historical building. Taiwan has not promulgated the Cultural Property Preservation Law until 1982. However, it is insufficient to establish the integral cognition of the historical building through the legal standard that only from the study of the historical background of the related issues to explore its definition and to define its content, so as to understand how one can probe intrinsically into the relationship among humanbeings, buildings and environment within the content of the preservation and rehabilitation of the historical building. This research is based on the argument of the German philosopher Martin Heidegger’s Dasein, temporality and everydayness, and Being-in-the-world which regards the building as the feature and justification of human existence. In the discussion of the preservation and rehabilitation of historical building in Taiwan, the exploration and application of Heidegger’s theory helps to establish the foothold of existential of humanbeing in the building, and to sustain its historical significance in the modern society.
