Blue Phase是一種介於Isotropic以及cholesteric相之間的液晶相,但是Blue Phase的3-D立體晶格構造非常的不穩定導致其溫度範圍非常狹窄(只有數k)。本篇論文於強誘電性液晶中加入可聚合型的高分子單體,並且於Blue Phase下進行聚合反應使高分子聚合在disclination line上來達成穩定Blue Phase的晶格構造使Blue Phase趨於穩定。在加入二官能基高分子單體後藍相溫度範圍擴張的效果不甚理想,之後在加入三官能基高分子單體後藍相溫度範圍可擴張至23℃。如果在其他液晶排列方式下進行聚合,此時高分子不於disclination line上聚合所以對Blue Phase溫度範圍的擴張幫助不大。高分子網狀結構不影響Smectic相出現的溫度範圍,所以Blue Phase的溫度擴張會受限於Smectic相的出現溫度。
Blue phase is a type of liquid crystal phases that appears in a temperature range between a chiral nematic phase and an isotropic liquid phase. Blue phases usually have a narrow temperature range. (usually less than a few kelvin) In this study, we use a monomer to stabilize the blue phase. The monomer was cured in blue phase and was assembled at the disclination line. After interfusing HDDA the range of temperature is not desirable, after interfusing TMTPA the temperature range of blue phase can expand to 23℃.If continue to polymerize under other liquid crystal phase, the polymer dose not polymerize on disclination line therefore it does not help a lot for the expansion of Blue Phase temperature range. The polymer network in ferroelectric liquid crystal can make a wide temperature range of blue phase, and the smectic phase is not affected . The Blue Phase temperature range is binded by smectic phase and isotropic phase.
