Hosting public exhibitions has been one of the most important functions of the modern museum, and a museum’s success is often measured by the popular reception of its exhibitions. Displaying in multimedia is shown to enhance an exhibition’s appeal and has become a favored option among museum professionals. Not only is the approach completely compatible with advanced presenting devices and digitizing technologies, but its ability to replace objects with storable and transferable data virtually renders such issues null as spectator inaccessibility, difficult or dangerous transportation or limitations in exhibiting space. The first chapter in my thesis surveys the range of technologies currently in use for multimedia displaying and speculates on how the possibilities may expand when more advanced options becoming available. The second chapter analyzes multimedia display as a channel of learning between museum exhibitions and exhibition visitors, with emphasis on how information is passed on and picked up in the experience. Chapter three looks at significant examples of using multimedia display in Taiwanese museums, offers informed critiques and makes recommendations according to the strong points and weaknesses in each case.
