Red Cloak, Golden Arrow is a play of Peking Opera. The plot was adapted from the traditional drama Si Lang Tan Mu (Yang Silang Visits His Mother). New characters were added to expand the original perspectives of two generations to cover three generations to explore the “place of return”, where the Yang clan can ultimately achieve peace after dying in battle from generation to generation. 15-year-old Yang Zongmei is the daughter of Yang Silang and Meng Jinbang. She has not seen her father since childhood. The story begins with Yang Silang returning to Song from Liao, and carefully depicts how Zongmei progressed from rejecting her father to gradually understanding him. This results in her finally taking the initiative to send the Golden Arrow to Liao in place of her father to save the princess and princess’s child. Red Cloak, Golden Arrow was an exercise in play-writing that combines Peking Opera with a three-act play structure. It was also the author’s attempt to answer the following question: How can Chinese opera, specifically performances of Peking Opera, and the traditional value system may operate and find a place for themselves in the present day world?
