A Bao Ma Zai is one of the lead troupes for a Taiwanese idolatrous procession. Their duty is to find a path and act as a messenger. In response to a lack of in-depth research conducted on the role of a Bao Ma Zai, this paper gathers information regarding the custom through literature reviews, comparative analyses, and fieldwork for its study. The introduction provides an overview of the format of this study. Surveys are conducted on a total of twenty-seven Bao Ma Zai from northern, central, and southern Taiwan, as well as those from Penghu, Beigang and other nearby areas. This research will focus on their personal backgrounds, costume designs, and parade processions, along with the history and lineage of their respective temples to document the style of the Bao Ma Zai for each area. This study will discuss the characteristics of Bao Ma Zai across Taiwan, the relationship between temple parade traditions and the Bao Ma Zai, and the future development of temple parades. According to this study, a Bao Ma Zai is commonly found in all sorts of idolatrous processions across Taiwan. Aside from their original role as a messenger, their duties later evolved to include dispelling evil and providing blessings. Their styles often reflect local characteristics and cultures, and changes to social patterns are the main factors that alter the function and style of a Bao Ma Zai. Along with the increased emphasis on cultural heritage over the years in Taiwan, this paper can be considered a foundation for future research on this topic. Its introduction and analysis of Bao Ma Zai in idolatrous processions provides a better understanding of the culture and transitions behind temple parade troupes in Taiwan, and serves as a reference for the preservation, inheritance, and development of intangible cultural heritage.
