The aim of this thesis is to translate and study Sarah Macdonald’s travel literature, Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure. I translate the first chapter of this novel and apply translation theories and techniques to discuss the first draft of my translation and the difficulties I encountered during translating. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to my study motives, purposes of translating this book, and an explanation of my study methods. Chapter two introduces the works and translations of travel literature and briefly introduces Sarah Macdonald and her books. In Chapter three, I review and discuss Peter Newmark’s and Lawrence Venuti’s translation theories to propose the strategies for translating this book and analyzing my first draft. In Chapter four, I use translation techniques to discuss the cause of and how to solve difficulties in translation. Chapter five is a conclusion of this thesis, including my comments on the some important points of this study and my suggestions for translating intercultural literature.
