A Correlation Study of Middle School Students' Family Function and Peer Interpersonal Relationship

The present study aimed to explore the relationship between junior high school students’ perception of family functions and their peer relationships, as well as the possible gender and grade differences. The study adopted a questionnaire survey method. The valid samples were 388 junior high school students from nine schools of five counties. The obtained data was analyzed by using multivariate analyses, Pearson correlations, canonical correlations and multiple regressions. The main results of this study are: First, junior high school students' perception of family functions decreased as grade increased, yet no gender difference was found. Second, junior high school students’ peer relationships showed gender and grade interaction effect. Third, some aspects in the perception of family functions and peer relationships related to the structures of family members and the intercourse with relatives and friends. Fourth, each aspect of family functions positively correlated with each aspect of peer relationships, and there were three typical canonical correlation paths between family functions and peer relationships. Fifth, school students’ gender, grade, the structures of family members, the intercourse with relatives and friends, and family functions together could significantly explain the variances of each aspect of peer relationships up to 18.8%~26.8%. The results of this imply that the structure of family members and the aspects of family functions play important roles in the peer relationships for junior high school students. Therefore, it is suggested that strengthening family counseling and parenting education to promote junior high school students’ perception of family functions will help improve the quality of their peer relationships.
