The subjects of this study are seven individuals who made career transitions due to their adult hobbies. The study will explore the relationship between adult hobbies and career transitions in order to understand the specific process by which adult hobbies influence career transitions. It examines how career development is impacted by this process, and perceives and reflects on the experience. The research employed the in-depth interview approach. Supplemented with semi-structured interview outlines, in order to collect the necessary information to conduct the overall study. Interviews with close friends of subjects and internet searches are used to collect information relevant to the topic of adult hobbies resulting in career transitions to work related to these hobbies. Additionally, the post-transition career of subjects must be in a different field than the original career. Subjects include three males and four females. One subject made the career transition at least 20 years prior to the study, one subject transitioned at least 10 years prior, and five subjects at least five years prior; all subjects are between 30–51 years of age. Through a detailed study of the career transition stories of the seven subjects, by understanding the enthusiasm of subjects for their hobbies, and the entire process of transitioning—from the subjects' studies to the period post career transition—this study tests for changes and influences of this process toward career development and conducts a discussion of results. The basic findings of this study are summarized below: 1. Studying one's hobby is a process of self-guided study. The process of career transition is a repeatedly subdivided overall process that includes the exploratory period of the hobby as well as periods of specification, selection, enthusiasm, introduction, and searching for meaning. In addition, after this process, understanding of oneself and reality is deepened. 2. When an individual making a career transition encounters difficulties, it is indicative of gains in their professional skills for the new career orientation and self-adjustment. These difficulties provide workers with good adaptability and resourcefulness. In order to adapt to difficulties resulting from changes in one’s environment, it is necessary to possess sound lifelong study skills. 3. Factors for successful career transition resulting from adult hobbies, in addition to the support of one’s environment, are primarily based on the internal qualities of the individual making the transition. In addition, strategies for successful career transitions must be based on appropriate development goals, effective self-management, and feedback and improvement between these two qualities. 4. After making a career transition based on adult hobbies, work values tend toward seeking self-realization, dignity, prestige, and a sense of family belonging. Based on the conclusions above, this study makes recommendations for those making career transitions, mature students, career consultants, related future research.
