摘要

本論文旨在比較《長日將盡》 (The Remains of the Day) 一書的小說及改編電影字幕譯文，分析小說與電影字幕之翻譯策略，是否因表現文本類型不同而有所差異，文中亦評析現有小說譯本，並將筆者為HBO台翻譯的字幕譯本與電影DVD版本的字幕譯本，做一比較評析。本論文分為五章，第一章介紹研究動機、研究方法及文獻回顧。第二章為文本簡介，介紹小說及電影，以及小說改編為電影時的轉變，並評析現有之小說譯本。第三章針對小說與電影字幕譯文，以實例探討其翻譯策略之差異，結果發現因表現媒體不同，在原文近似的情況下，電影字幕偏向採用較精簡的譯法，方式為減譯或使用慣用語，且與小說譯文相比語境較低。第四章評比筆者本身及電影DVD的字幕版本，指出兩個版本的優劣，以做為日後借鏡。第五章將論文做一總結並提出建議。

The main purpose of this paper is to compare the translations of novel and film subtitle of The Remains of the Day. The author tries to figure out if their translation strategies differ from each because of the text type. The author also comments on the novel translation of the book and compare her own film subtitle translation for HBO channel and another version from DVD video. This paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction and the literature review. The second chapter presents a brief introduction of the book, the film, and the changes in the text when it is adapted for the silver screen. The author also comments on the Chinese translation of the book. The third chapter discusses the difference in the translation strategies of novel and film subtitle. It finds the text type does influence the translation approaches. While the original text is similar, the translation versions of film subtitle tend to use fewer words by simplifying messages or using fixed phrases. Besides, the language register in the translation of film subtitle is lower than it is in the novel translation. The fourth chapter is a commentary of the author's film subtitle translation and the other translation version of the film DVD. The last chapter presents the summary and suggestions of this paper.
