Documentaries about navy warships are popular in Taiwan; however, subtitle errors related to naval terms are frequently seen. Utilizing text typology and communicative translation theory, this study has selected three navy documentaries released by Discovery Channel during 1995 and 1997 to have an insight of their translation quality and mistranslated naval terms and to see the variation of translation quality and strategies comparing to the other eight newer naval documentaries. Interviews with translation companies and a translator have been conducted to find out the factors affecting translation quality other than professional military knowledge. The suggestions to naval terms translation strategies have been offered according to the communicative translation theory. The result of this study reveals that related translation problems are mainly caused by insufficient professional knowledge, inadequate use of references, and ignorance of long-standing problems. Moreover, how the translation industry operates is also critical to translation quality. The background knowledge of translators and editors and translation strategies they use are still key factors to mistranslation despite the applications of the Internet and computer software that have been considered helpful to translation quality in recent years. Communicative translation should be used as a major strategy in naval terms translation to convey correct meaning of naval terms to the audience. It is hoped that the result can draw the attention of both movie and translation industries to the problems, and contribute to naval terms translation in subtitling.
