Not only is community a geographic term, it also has the connotation of collective culture and lifestyle. The government promotes community development with the objective of fostering a sense of community through artistic activities. However, culture should be the extension of authentic lifestyle and habits. This research explores whether the authentic picture of a community can only be presented through a long term engagement and effort, with its focus on the way in which the performing arts group interacts with the community and what kind of harvest and change will it bring to its operation. This research takes the Shinehouse Theater in Wanhua District of Taipei City as an example. By examining its community related events and interviewing event participants, and then through case study method analyze the influence of drama activities and performance on the linkages of community relations. Evaluate how performing art groups can build up relationships with local communities. This thesis contends that performing arts can facilitate building a sense of community. Furthermore, diversified and long-term interactions with community help to bring deeper connection between theater groups' and the community. The conclusion of this thesis is the six dimensions of forming relationship between the performing art groups and the community, including: 1) creative style that integrates local stories; 2) development timeline that combines the community characteristics; 3) presentation of art work that respects the local culture; 4) planning the relations between long term strategic development and funding from the public sector; 5) deliberating future challenges and opportunities; 6) following the global trend of localization. In the current case where there is only a few literature discussing the application of performance art in the community, this thesis contributes by providing a basis for theoretical structure and a viable practical model for the public sector, performance art groups, community cultural organizations and other related administrations to design community development programs, carry out local theater promotional events, and build solutions to foster a sense of community. Moreover, amid the movement of globalization, this study aims to present distinctive Taiwan experience and model of establishing connections between performance art groups and the community.
