This thesis develops a 4.5 kW brushless DC generator drive for wind energy conversion system (WECS). The generator drive system consists of a brushless DC generator driven by a brushless DC motor. In this system, an ac-to-dc inverter is proposed to convert three phase electrical power by generator with varying voltage and varying frequency to DC voltage. The output power of the system is adjusted by detecting the DC-bus voltage as well as the line voltage and line current of the generator. Constant output current, constant output power and DC-bus voltage regulation can be performed by the system. The proposed space-vector based feed-forward current control uses the position information from the absolute encoder, DC-bus voltage and the line current of the generator to determine the instantaneous duty ratios of the power switches. The MPPT performance has been verified by the experimental results.
