台灣翻譯研究所學生的筆譯焦慮

Translation Anxiety among Student Translators in Graduate Institutes in Taiwan

摘要


焦慮對學習過程及學習成果具有負面影響,翻譯研究也發現高度焦慮的學生在翻譯表現上不如中度焦慮的同學,為了幫助學生降低焦慮程度並藉此改善學習狀況,首要目標就是區別學生的焦慮程度以及他們的焦慮來源,然而現有的筆譯焦慮研究仍不足以判別學生譯者的筆譯焦慮,因此本研究旨在探討台灣翻譯研究所學生的筆譯焦慮以及其來源。研究樣本為32名104學年度第二學期修習筆譯課程的台灣翻譯研究生,研究工具採用自行設計之「筆譯焦慮量表」,其內容綜合「外語教室焦慮量表」(FLCAS, Horwitz et al., 1986)、「外語閱讀焦慮量表」(FLRAS, Saito et al., 1999),以及「第二語言寫作焦慮量表」(SLWAI, Cheng, 2004),結果顯示受試者焦慮程度爲中等,其焦慮大多來自時間限制、原文/語言能力、以及自信心,而測驗評量則是最小的來源,研究建議教室環境應鼓勵、激勵學生學習,教師應幫助維持課堂討論順暢進行。

Anxiety is known to negatively affect learning process and outcome. Translation studies have found that anxious students perform less well than those with moderate levels of anxiety. In order to help reduce students’ anxiety levels and thus improve their learning, it is important to identify anxious students and the sources of their anxiety. However, studies on translation anxiety are far from adequate for understanding student translators’ anxieties. The present study investigated student translators’ translation anxiety with a focus on the students in graduate institutes and programs in Taiwan and the contributors to their translation anxieties. The 32 participants were all translation and interpretation graduate students who took translation classes in the spring semester (January to June), 2016 in Taiwan. Outcome measurement was a self-designed translation anxiety scale, which combined the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS, Horwitz et al., 1986), the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS, Saito et al., 1999), and the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI, Cheng, 2004). The results showed that the participants had a moderate level of translation anxiety. Their anxiety mostly came from time limitation, source text/language competence, and confidence, and lastly from evaluation. It was suggested that classroom environment should be encouraging and motivating, and instructors should help make in-class discussions go smoothly.
