Applying the Elder and Youth Co-Creation Model on Medication Aids Design for Elder

Because the characteristics and needs of the elderly must be considered when designing for the elderly, many studies bring them into the design process for participatory design. However, the elderly have mostly played the role of a consultant or tester and not had practical, active participation in design. Therefore, this study integrated experience-based co-design as well as design thinking procedures and tools. Specifically, we aimed to develop the elder and youth co-creation model and applied this model to the design of medication aids that are essential to the elderly. We also aimed to explore the influence and benefits of the elder and youth co-creation model on both the elderly and young designers. Through this model, both groups can work together in designs that focus on the elderly, to deeply understand the needs of the elderly, and to make use of the rich experience of the elderly. The unique creativity of young designers can also help and improve their empathy for the elderly, and older people can thus actively participate in the design process. In this study, the elder and youth co-creation model was implemented in the form of workshops. Nine senior citizens and eight design students were recruited and participated in five co-creation workshops: mutual contact, understanding users, defining problems, forming concepts, and prototype drawing and testing. Subsequent confirmation and redesigning of the medication aids for the elderly were carried out through conducting focus group interviews after the workshop. Data were collected through interviews for analysis and discussion. The results of this study show that the young designers improved their empathy for users, identified the potential needs of target customers, obtained a correct understanding of their needs, and designed products that met the needs and expectations of the target customers. The elder and youth co-creation model can be used as a method to stimulate the diverse design ideas of young designers in tandem with the ideas of the elderly, which can assist in reorganization from multiple directions and levels and explore a variety of unique and diverse ideas. The elder and youth co-creation model can also enhance the creativity and confidence of the elderly and serve as a way to exhibit their valuable skills and experience. This can quickly build up the creative cognition of older participants when they feel that their ideas are valued in design, and more in-depth discussions with a more active co-creation attitude can be experienced. In the design process, the skills, experiences, and abilities of the elderly can be explored and displayed. Therefore, the elder and youth co-creation model can be used as a reference for cooperative design between the elderly and young designers.
