In today's quick changing market demands, a company’s competiveness relies on its ability to respond in time and in good service to customers’ demands. This requires effectively optimized the limited resources under gradually increased pressure from competition. In this study, using metal industry as an example, simulation models constructed from ARENA software are validated and used as platform to examine the effectiveness of DBR (Drum-Buffer-Rope) scheduling over push/pull hybrid approach. With proper experimental design, this study finds that the performance of a push/pull hybrid approach depends on the length of periodic order release, with respect to product total time, order total time, work-in-processes (WIPs), order tardiness, number of unit tardy, and flow value. Flow value (Lin, 2016) is a measure of the logistics performance of a production system, adopted in this study to evaluate the stagnation time of the production line in terms of the quantity and cycle time of the products. In addition, DBR scheduling can further improve system’s performance. With examined using a sensitivity analysis, DBR scheduling outperforms push/pull hybrid approach in all three types of demand patterns.
