The cutting-tool industry in Taiwan had gone through a very fast development era during 1980~1990, due to the facts that the need is big and the market was completely manufacturing-oriented. The related technology had grown better and better during the decade because the income was sufficient and the industry invested more on manufacturing technologies for cutting different materials. Nowadays, the industry is confronting severe competition threats because China has constrained the export of natural materials, domestic and international competition has become even more severe, and lack of technology improvement. Under the situation, one of the most important issues that the cutting-tool industry has to deal with is to looking for and implementing competition strategies. This research firstly analyzes the overall competition environment by using non-structured interview method to interview many cutter manufacturers who may represent most of the cutter manufacturing industries. The interview insights are then summarized by 5-force analysis and SWOT analysis. Finally, some development strategies are presented and discussed based on the interview results and the 20-year experience in the cutting-tool industry of the researcher. Hopefully the outcome of the research can help the cutter industries to refine their own competition strategies based on their own interior resource and exterior competition status.
