The eight songs in Robert Schumann’s (1810-1856) song cycle Op. 42 “Frauenlie- be und Leben” (1840) have a highly literary sensibility. He composed different types of accompaniment according to the song lyrics and made skillful use of musical maneuvers to express different sentiments, such as pauses and percussion chords for shyness and heartbeats in first love and beautiful melodies resembling folk songs for betrothal happiness. Rhythms were aligned to the prosody in the poems, for example, the use of dotted and long notes for arrangements with accents and emphasis on the meanings of keywords. Schumann also leveraged composition techniques including ornaments, intervals, transposition, semitone harmony and dynamics contrast. All of these have proved that this vocal music composition is a classic masterpiece with high artistic value among the art songs in the 19th century.
