According to the report of Parkin et al in 1993, oral squamous cell carcinoma is the 6th most common cancer worldwide and the 3rd in the developing countries. While in Taiwan, oral squamous cell carcinoma is up raising to the 5th most common cancer death since 1995 in male population. Despite the advances in surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the prognosis of this cancer is still very poor and has not changed over the past few decades. In fact, cancer is no longer an incurable disease. It can be able to treat easily if early diagnoses especially in oral squamous cell carcinoma. The 5 years survival rate is more than 80% in early stages while only less than 25% survival rate in late stage cases. Therefore, early detection, diagnosis and early treatment are crucial in increasing survival rate. However, in our clinical analysis, only less than 20% of patients were diagnosed as stage I when they first presented in our clinic. Many cases were unable to treat surgically when they came. They can only be treated palliative with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Their prognoses were poor. The reasons why these patients not came earlier were mostly due to ignorance of the disease nature and behavior. They usually denied the existence of the lesion or even want to try herbs at first. That causes the loss of optimal treatment time and also the good prognosis. In order to understand the attitudes and manage behavior of people in relation to oral cancer, we performed a questionnaire study on all peoples who visited our out patient department with or without diseases. All peoples have to complete a questionnaire assessing their awareness of the causative factors, early symptom & signs and treatment methods of oral cancer. Hope we can find out the best prevention strategies to decrease the mortality rate of oral cancer.
