Peritonitis is a common complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Repeated and severe infections often lead to changes in peritoneal structure, and even leading to peritoneal function failure. For long-term PD patients, peritonitis is a major cause of PD technique failure. In the peritonitis recommendations of International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) updated in 2016 are as follows: the empirical antibiotic therapy should be initiated as soon as possible after appropriate microbiological specimens have been obtained, according to the history of microbiological infections in the PD center and covering both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Once culture results and sensitivities are known, antibiotic therapy should be adjusted to appropriate narrow-spectrum agents.
