摘要

我國各大學全面推動通識教育始於民國74學年度(1984-85)，10餘年來通識教育的重要性，已經逐漸為各大學院校教師及行政主管所肯定。為了較為具體地瞭解美國著名大學推動通識教育之狀況，所以，我們在民國84年6月8日至22日，以兩週時間，訪問了十所美國知名學府，包括柏克萊加州大學、史丹福大學、芝加哥大學、哈佛大學、麻省理工學院、哥倫比亞大學、紐約市立大學、Rutgers紐澤西州立大學(New Brunswick)、普林斯頓大學、馬里蘭大學(College Park)。除了蒐集各校書面資料之外，並與各校主管通識教育的院長、副校長或校長座談，當面請益，以作為思考我國大學通識教育工作策略之參考。

This is a report of delegation of Taiwan scholars who visited American universities on June 8(superscript th)-22(superscript nd), 1995. The delegation spent two weeks to visit ten universities in the United States included U.C. (Berkely), Stanford, Cieago, Harvard, MIT, Columbia, Rutgers, Princeton and University of Maryland (College Park). Members of the delegation collected materials pertaining to general education program in every university and held discussions with faculties and administrators. The report summarizes the major findings of their visit.
