The Physical and Psychological Development in Relation to Menarcheal Age Inschool Girls in Taiwan

並列摘要

This study is a continuation of a research of the authors on the physical and psychological development in relation to menarcheal age in school girls in Taipei area. Subjects covered, 8,790 in number, are school girls in Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Hualien. Both rural and urban population are represented. The data collected are put together with those found in Taipei area for analysis. The size of the entire sample is 11,0360. It is found that the mean age of sex maturation of school girls in Taiwan is 160.44 months or 13.37 years. This is nearly identical to that has been found in Taipei area alone and is very close to the findings in Western countries. The whole range of the age of the onset of puberty is, however, rather great. The effect of geographic and socio-economic factors on physical development seems to have been confirmed. Those who are residents in urban area, who are of high socio-economic status, and whose parents have better education, tend to reach their maturity at an earlier age. As it is expected, psychological development has always accompanied with physical changes. After puberty, girls tend to become more self-conscious, with greater need of independence and with increasing feeling that they are not understood by their parents. Generally, girls show a negative attitude toward their menstration which has apparently caused a good deal of anxiety. That is due mainly to lack of information. Health education in regard to the physical development at puberty is, therefore, very important.
