Authenticity and Decontextualization: A Preliminary Survey of Zhang Ailing's Views on Love, Life, and Literature

This paper aims to preliminarily survey the ”vacuum-like” and ”pollution-free” views of love, life, and literature of Zhang Ailing, one of the most popular women writers in the history of modern Chinese literature. The paper uses ”authenticity” and ”decontextualization” as the key concepts to demonstrate that, for Zhang Ailing, notwithstanding the referent is her life, her concept of love, or her belief in literature, to be authentic means to be apart from the real, that is, to be decontextualized. In her tales of love, an authentic love cannot grow and develop in the real world, just as a good literary work should maintain a distance from reality. Her gudao (isolated island) lifestyle further displays her detached attitude toward life. Through a series of textual analyses of Zhang's works, and a detail look of Zhang's life home and abroad, the present author would like to proof that ”authenticity” and ”decontextualization” are the two concepts which best characterize Zhang as a person, and as a writer of artistic as well as personal integrity.
