摘要

廿世紀中國出現倡導獨身的聲音時，隨即遭到強烈的質疑和關切，特別是女子的獨身。本文是根據廿世紀前半期，各期刊報紙中有關女性獨身的議題進行研究。其中「探尋女子獨身的原因」一節，從西方影響說起，爬梳當時對女性獨身原因的各種揣測。「解決女子獨身的問題：爲誰說話？」一節，鋪陳論者所能想到，從家庭到生育各種令女性恐懼裹足的困難，以及他們爲了支持或反對女性獨身而提出的各種安慰、馴誘、教訓或改革倡議。「建構女子獨身的處境：是虛擬或真實？」一節，則描述論者或以嘲諷、或以同情、或以近乎恐嚇的方式，勸退意圖獨身的女性。而「獨身女性的態度：妥協乎？堅持乎？」一節，則嘗試挖掘真實獨身女性的言論和人生經驗，來回應前述的各種論點。

When proponents of singleness spoke out in 20(superscript th) century China, they were immediately met with strong doubts and concerns, especially those advocating female Celibacy. This paper studies magazine and newspaper publications made during the first half of the 20(superscript th) century centering on female Celibacy. The chapter on ”Listening to the Voice of Female Celibacy” analyses the possible reasons why some females chose to remain single from the perspective of Western influences. The chapter ”Solving the Problem of Female Celibacy: Speaking on Whose Behalf?” covers a wide scope of commentaries such as those on family issues, marriage, and women's fear of the practice of footbinding, as well as the commentators' words of comfort, cajoling, and efforts to educate, as well as their proposal for reforms, in their wish to support or condemn female Celibacy. In ”Reconstructing the Situation of Female Celibacy: Real or Imagined?,” focus is made on commentators' efforts to deride, show compassion for or even, threaten women from practicing singleness. The chapter ”Single Women's Attitude: Giving in or insisting?” tries to probe into the words and life experiences of single women as a way of responding to the commentaries made on the subject.
