This article examines how Chinese received and practiced the notion of ”free divorce”(ziyou lihun) by Chinese people as seen in the articles of the Ladies' Journal (Funü zazhi, 1915-1931). ”Free divorce” is a subject which can be located in the nexus between tradition/modern and East/West. Furthermore, we cannot overlook the gender implications of ”free divorce”; for it involved both genders in discourse as well as practice. Therefore, I focus on gender differences especially in terms of how the notion of ”free divorce” was actually practiced by the Chinese people. In utilizing the notion of gender and examining the texts in the Ladies' Journal, this article tries to explore a Chinese-style ”free divorce” model, and analyzes the gender differences and power divisions agency between men and women. This helps illuminate how Chinese ”new youth” responded to and experimented with Western ideas, and what new problems happened to be produced by these experiments which Chinese society then had to face and solve.
