Analysis on the Army Basic Tactics-an Application of Adaptive Model of War(AMoW)

Since 20(superscript th) century, military operations researchers developed mathematical models based on historical data to represent dynamic relationship of combat process, including space-time factors and forces strength. Therefore, the application of mathematical models becomes one of research topic of military operations research.Epstein's adaptive model of war (AMoW) retrieve the defects of Lanchester models, they are: 1. there is no feedback between withdraw and attrition; 2. there is no trading of space for time; 3. there is no diminishing marginal returns. However, this research argues that a operational model should be able to describe four basic tactics: attack, defend, pursuit and retreat. From mathematic point of view, AMoW possesses some merit; even though, there is not much practical application of such model. This research attempts to apply AMoW to basic tactics, and furthermore, to modify AMoW to represent reinforcing and delaying forces. This study shows that AMoW is not only capable of representing basic tactics, but also reinforcing and delaying operations if parameters are adjusted appropriately. The military analysts, researchers and decision-makers might adopt these results in their analysis to reveal the rules and logic of engagements.
