The origins and dispersal of the Formosan natives in the east coast are discussed in this paper. The earlier settlements in the east coast include Puyuma (4500BP), Basay-Kavalan (3500BP), and Amis (3000BP), as based on linguistic evidence. The more recent settlements include Rukai (400BP), Paiwan (300BP), Bunun (250BP), Seediq (200BP), Siraya (190BP), Kavalan (170BP), as based on written documents, oral traditions, Dutch demography in the 17th century, etc.
