The Western poetic theory exerted great influence on the writers' literary ideas and creative writing practice during the May 4(superscript th) New Literature Movement. As the opponent of the New Culture Movement, The bloc of Xue Heng highlighted the cultural value of Chinese classical poetry by the means of introducing and translating Western poetry. Wu Mi, though of the opinion that poetry is untranslatable, rendered a lot of Western poetry with the classical Chinese poetic forms and his achievement has been favorably recognized ever since. This paper is an exploration of Wu Mi, a poet-translator with some culture authority, and his theory and practice of Western poetry translation in the early twentieth century. The discussion will focus on his achievement in translating poetry, his translation poetics, and subsequently the influence of his translation work on his poetic writing.
