Zi Zhi Tong Jian (Comprehensive Mirror Providing Material for Government) by Sima Guang (1019-1086) of Northern Sung Dynasty contains 294 volumes in which it recounts the Chinese history text of annual chronology in 1362 years from Warring States to the Tang Dynasty. Upon the Sung Dynasty was overthrown by Yuan Dynasty, Hu Sanxing (1230-1302) of the Southern Sung Dynasty led a reclusive life during which he composed Zi Zhi Tong Jian Zhu (Annotation on Comprehensive Mirror Providing Material for Government) given in detailed recountal. Professor Chen Yuan (1880-1971) in the republics lived in Beijing during the Sino-Japanese War and composed Tong Jian Hu Zhu Biao Wei (Subtle Expression of Annotation on Hu Sanxing's Comprehensive Mirror Providing Material for Government), honoring Hu's feeling torn by the fall of nation and patriotism committed to his Zi Zhi Tong Jian Zhu. Aiming to analyze the methods of biao wei (subtle expression) in Chen Yuan's Tong Jian Hu Zhu Biao Wei, this study sets forth six focal points and gives illustrations for in-depth interpretation.
