Power and Strength of Networked Media and Connective Action: The Case of Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement

摘要

2014年底的雨傘運動，除了是香港歷史上最大規模的公民抗命，亦具備新社運模式網絡社會運動（networked social movement）和連結型行動（connective action）的特徵，包括以網絡媒體作為溝通協調的科技基礎。本文指出，網絡媒體和連結型行動一方面容許更多人以自己喜歡的方式參與，從而壯大運動的聲勢，但另一方面亦可以因其非中心化的傾向而增加運動組織者跟當權者進行策略性博奕的難度。通過分析現場調查所得數據，本文展示運動參與者的網絡媒體使用和活動狀況。分析顯示越活躍於網絡媒體的參與者對現場占領行動的參與程度越高，但現場參與程度越高的參與者傾向不願意在運動策略問題上聽取主要組織者的意見。分析結果指出網絡媒體及連結型行動對社會運動帶來的助力和挑戰。

The Umbrella Movement in late 2014 was not only the largest civil disobedience campaign in the history of Hong Kong, but also exhibited some characteristics of ＂networked social movement＂ and ＂connective action,＂ including the prevalence of digital media as a tool for mobilization and coordination. This article contends that digital media and the logic of connective action can empower a movement through allowing wider participation, but simultaneously can lead to decentralization of a movement, increasing the difficulty of strategic decision-making by movement leaders. Analyzing data from an onsite survey of protesters, the article shows the extent of participant participation in digital media activities. Digital media activities are found to relate positively to involvement in the occupied site, which is related to lower willingness to listen to the movement leaders regarding questions of movement strategy. The study thus illustrates both the power and challenges brought to social movements by digital media and the logic of connective action.
