This report addresses nursing experience when treating a teenage girl, aged 13, who was suffering from major back pain due to severe scoliosis and who had undergone spinal surgery. By applying Gordon's 11 health functions model, the author collected information through communication and physical examination from 1st April to 10th April 2011. The results indicated that this patient had the problems with acute pain, deficits in self-care functioning and disturbance to her body image. Various measures were implemented including logrolling and the distraction method, reducing contact to the wound, relieving the acute pain and building self-care function. External bracing and a walker helped the patient to carry out exercise, reduce the pain and become independent. The provision of mental support allowed the patient to rebuild her self-esteem and self-value and thus overcome the disturbances to her body image. Together the above measures allowed the patient to regain a positive attitude and behavior allowing her to adjust to the life difference after surgery.
