The present study reports on the immediate effects of coffee, which is taken up one hour before exercise, on the levels of human serum lipids and lipoproteins after a 90-minute bicycle exercise at 50% VO2max(the maximum oxygen consumption). The subjects are five male soccer-playing college students, 22.4 years old and 65.4kg in weight on average. They participated in the tests of the 90-minute automatic bicycle exercise twice for two weeks. One hour after drinking water 200 c.c.or Nescaf'e coffee 0.1 g/kg B.W. (containing caffeine 3 mg/kg B.W.) at the first and second weeks respectively, they rode the bicycle for 90 minutes at 50% VO2max Then, the venous blood samplings were sent to analyze the effects on triglycerides (TG), cholesterol and lipoproteins levels. By the statistical methods, We had the following results: 1. After taking up coffee, total serum lipids have an increasing tendency. And among them, TG increase significantly (P<0.05), but cholesterol and lipoproteins are not. 2. The heart rate is higher in drinking coffee (159.4 beat/min) than drinking water (149.6 beat/min).With regard to the caloric consumption, there is no difference between these two situations after bicycling.
