Backpacking is one of the travel types that emphasizes cultural contact with the local community. Drawing on certain intercultural competencies, backpackers can facilitate cultural understanding, emotional exchange, and social communication between host and guest through the cultural contact process, thereby practicing a tourism "contact zone." This study aims to explore the cultural contact experience of backpackers to understand the intercultural competence they perform. Phenomenology was used as the methodology, and 15 backpackers were interviewed. Seven themes emerged: (1) interested in cultural differences and exploring special attractions; (2) respecting cultural differences and complying with cultural rules; (3) obtaining cultural knowledge and understanding cultural differences; (4) pursuing interactive experiences and entering the daily life of locals; (5) appreciating cultural differences and enjoying the cultural atmosphere; (6) reflecting between cultures, reducing prejudices and further preservation; and (7) cherishing tourism memories and responding to daily life. Managerial implications for destination management and backpackers are also discussed to promote positive cultural contacts.
