The Relationship of Internet Addiction with Sleep Quality, Learning Attention, and Executive Function in Children

With the rapid development of information technology, Internet addiction has become younger and more serious. This study aims to explore the relationship of Internet addiction with sleep quality, learning attention, and executive function in children. This is a cross-sectional research design using convenience sampling from three elementary schools in Taipei, Taiwan. Instruments include Internet Addiction Scale, Learning Attention Scale, Sleep Quality Scale, and Stroop test. Data statistics were performed by chi-square test, independent t test, and regression analysis. The results showed that a total of 123 school age children participated in the study, aged 11.34±0.78 years old, with an average Internet addiction score of 49.07±16.4 points. 41.5% (n=51) of participants had Internet addiction, and those with Internet addiction had nighttime Insomnia (t = -2.117, p = 0.036), learning concentration (t = 2.76, p <0.01) and executive function significantly lower than those of school children without Internet addiction. Time spent on Internet, learning attention, sleep quality, and Stroop test in incongruent reaction time might be the main predictors of the Internet addiction in children. This study provides schools and parents with a better understanding of school-age children's Internet addiction and its correlation with sleep quality, learning concentration, and executive function, which can be used as a reference for future related intervention measures.
