This paper bases on the S-C-P paradigm of Industry Organization (IO) and explicitly uses branching as a conduct variable to investigate the relationships between market competition and performance in Taiwanese banking industry. Differing from the previous studies, this paper adopts the path analysis, a submodel of structural equation model, to estimate the effects among these three variables. Comparing with CR4, market share has a significantly positive effect on the return on equities, implying the efficiency-structure hypothesis could not be rejected. The synergy effect of financial holding company affiliation has not been quite fulfilled during the period under consideration. However, the effect of branching on market share is significantly positive, indicating that branching strategy can help banks to gain more market shares.
