Japanese Tradition of Appreciating Art and "Period Rooms"

摘要

During the wave of Japanese modernization in the Meiji period (1868-1912), the tradition of display of art was disregarded and strongly influenced by the European model of the museum system, along with the academic system of art history and aesthetics. The museum system imported from the West in categorizing art objects by exhibition is totally heterogeneous according to the Japanese tradition of appreciating art and craftwork in various combinations in the environmental setting. Zashiki Kazari, the manner for arranging ornamental objects in the guest room since Muromachi period (1336-1573) is considered to suggest that the display style of "period rooms" with architectural environment is suitable for historical and cultural setting of appreciating art. The Jōtenkaku Museum and the Tokugawa Museum are introduced as the representative examples of "period rooms" in Japanese museums.
