What will Buddhists who are committed to compassion and tolerance react if peace is threatened by violence and their nation is invaded by foreigners? By examining Buddhist texts and historical records, this paper investigates the relations among Buddhism, nation/nationalism, observing Buddhist precepts and fulfilling national duties, as well as Buddhist idea of compassion and practice of violence. By such study, a true meaning of peace in Buddhism may be revealed.
