Dance, visual arts, music, and drama are all in the realm of art, conveyed in different forms of expression to the beholder. Movements, lines, colors, sounds, and words are examples of “elements” for art presentation. Elements may be different in nature, but they can be combined in some way to promote creativity. Images can be used to help dancers build up concepts of dance elements. Through visually creative thinking, concepts can be formed in depth and works can be expressed in breadth. In addition to personal space and general space, our space awareness in dance also include concepts of level, direction, pathway, and range. All these can be integrated into visual images in space, and used as visual stimuli for creative thinking in dance. The objectives of the current study are: (1) to explore how performers can benefit from visually triggered mental images to improve their realization of space and develop the expressiveness of body movement in space; (2) by presenting visual stimuli, to make viewers comprehend the connection between properties of space elements and dance, hence activate their inspiration and creation about dance.
