The Effects of Adaptive Automation on Situation Awareness and Mental Workload in Main Control Room

Some automation allocation problems are carried by digitizing the human-system interface in main control room. Adaptive automation (AA), which has been proposed as a method for managing human workload and reduced out-of-the-loop performance problems in a dynamic complex system, is one of approaches to human-centred automation. The purpose of this paper is to measure the effects of AA on situation awareness, workload, and performance in main control room of nuclear power plant. The simulated task combined reactor shutdown and alarm reset model. Twelve subjects performed simulation trials involving: (1) completely Manual control (LOA 2) trail; (2) low automation allocation; (3) medium automation allocation; (4) high automation allocation; and (5) completely Supervisory control (LOA 9) trail. Result revealed that high-level automation produced superior primary task performance and secondary task performance, and low-level automation facilitated higher level 1 SA. When a greater percentage of reactor shutdown task time was Supervisory (LOA 9), operator’s workload was reduced. In addition, as a result of high workload, operators produced the most probability of human error at completely Manual control (LOA 2) trail.
