Abstract In-mold decoration is one of the advanced injection molding technologies. There are four steps in this processing : (1) ink printing, (2) high pressure forming, (3) die cutting, (4) insert molding. The advantages of these processing are not only to make colorful molded parts, but also are ecological processing. These molded parts belong to the rules of green part design. The metal-like is one of popular colors for electronic kitchen products. The feeling of film with metal made by using PVD-sputtering processing is better than that by screen printing. This study investigated that (1) the effects of the three different conditions, such as, injection velocity, melt temperature, and mold temperature, on the metal wash-out of the film; (2) the effects of different surface pretreatments on the bonding strength between the metal of the film and the molded plastic part. The metal on the PET film was made by using PVD-sputtering processing. The metal wash-out of the PET film increased with injection velocity, melt temperature, and mold temperature. The bonding strength between the metal of the film and the molded plastic part was affected by both melt and mold temperatures. Both surface pretreatments, such as primer resin and plasma, increased the bonding strength between the metal of the film and the molded plastic part.
