Rapid progress has been made in the fabrication and application of long-length flexible composite high-temperature superconducting (HTS) bismuth-based wires. Many of the applications will operate in an ac environment. AC-loss requirements for different applications are summarized. Recent progress on ac losses is reviewed, including the development of lower-loss twisted multifilamentary wire, a refined procedure for ac transport measurement, and a new calorimetry technique.
