Using Volunteered Geographic Information of Social Media Platform to Evaluate Spatial Patterns of Tourism and Recreation Resources: A Case Study in Tamsui, Taiwan

Field investigations of tourism and recreation resources are important but time-consuming. Volunteered geographic information (VGI) provides novel method for investigations of tourism and recreation resources. In the study, we investigated tourism and recreation resources with field investigation and VGI investigation in Tamsui Old Street. Facebook (FB), the most popular social network platform in Taiwan, was chosen to be the VGI data of tourism and recreation resources in Tamsui Old Street. We found that the spatial distances of tourism and recreation resources between actual and FB locations are less than 50 meters, only few tourism and recreation resources are more than 1,000m. The number of field investigation of tourism and recreation resource is FB investigation's 2.39 times. Thus, field investigation has irreplaceable importance. Based on the like and check-in numbers on November, 2013, there were differences between each tourism and recreation resources. We suggested that the like and check-in numbers are useful for assessing popular degrees of tourism and recreation resources when lack of information.
