Tourism has been recognized as the most promising industry in the 21st century. At the macro level Taiwan must adapt new ways of thinking and innovative conceptualization to plan new strategies for its tourism development. To reach a consensus for the new strategies, the Tourism Bureau has opened its channels to academia and industry. A variety of issues have been discussed with tourism professionals, scholars, and practitioners for revisions through seminars and conferences. The new strategies consist of new thoughts, visions, and goal, and three major directions for tourism development, resulting in ten strategies to be undertaken. To implement these strategies and realize the goals, an action plan to be collaboratively implemented by the central and local governments in the future has been formulated. Ultimately, a viable environment for sustainable tourism development in Taiwan will be shaped and, thereby, a fresh, new image of Taiwan will emerge on the international tourism scene.
