The study enrolled 860 subjects who were 40 to 59 years of age and came to a medical center in central Taiwan for government employee physical checkup between August 2001 and October 2002. The rates of abnormalities were: 26.5% for overweight, 11.6% for obese, 10.3% for hypertension (7.8% for high systolic and 7.6% for high diastolic blood pressure), 24% for hyperuricemia, 38.8% for hypercholesterolemia, 8.1 % for hypertriglycerolemia, 7.2% for high fasting glucose. The test results significantly increased with age in females while only systolic blood pressure and fasting blood sugar increased with age in males significantly (p<0.05). The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors was 61.2% with an average (±standard deviation) of 0.98±1.01, and 8.7% for three or more factors; the rate of metabolic syndrome was 9.9% with mean of 1.02 ± 1.06, both were significantly different in gender (p<0.001). The study population had lower test results of all variables except uric acid and cholesterol in males. Physical fitness can remind the examinees of the importance of exercise, and therefore is recommended to be checked routinely in related physical checkups.
