Abstract The main purpose of this study was to explore the differences in seventh-grader mathematics achievement between Southeast Asian immigrant children and Taiwanese children. In this study, 51 new immigrant children were selected to pair with 51 Taiwanese children from two schools in Taoyuan County. “The survey of new immigrant children basic data,” and “The basic mathematics ability test in grade seven” were the research tools. Socioeconomic status, school, gender and Mandarin performance are used as control variables to pair up new immigrant children and Taiwanese ones. The results show that : 1. There were no significant differences on the test “the basic mathematics ability test in grade seven” between new immigrant children and Taiwanese children . 2. There were no significant differences on the subjects “number and quantity” and “algebra” between new immigrant children and Taiwanese children . 3. There were no significant differences in “conceptual understanding” and “procedure execution”, but there were significant differences in “problem solving” between new immigrant children and Taiwanese children on the ability level. Based on the above, we found that after controlling those four factors, new immigrant children are weaker only in their ability of “problem solving.” Except that, there is almost no difference between new immigrant children and Taiwanese children in their performance. New immigrant children may not be the disadvantaged learning group. The underlying causes of their poor academic achievement may be these adverse effect factors.
