摘要
宗教與商品經濟活動之間到底存在著甚麼樣的聯繫？宗教對經濟的發展有沒有起到積極地推動作用？這些問題已經成為當代宗教研究的課題之一。馬克斯．韋伯(Max Weber) 對基督新教倫理與資本主義精神關係的闡述，為我們重新認識佛教倫理與商品經濟之間的關係提供了一些啟發。本文嘗試借用韋伯的相關理論，批判性地探討佛教布施倫理與社會經濟活動之間的聯繫。首先，我將分析馬克思和韋伯有關宗教社會學理論，說明宗教活動與商品經濟之間的關係；然後，介紹早期佛教與商人的關係，探討佛教產生的社會背景，分析佛教布施倫理的社會和商品經濟功能。本文希望通過分析和研究早期佛教經典文獻，重新認識佛教的社會經濟性質，幫助人們理解當代佛教寺院商品經濟的發展。

This paper, in reference to the theory of Max Weber on Protestantism and Capitalism, examines the relation between Buddhist ethics of giving and economical activism of Buddhists. At the beginning, it analyzes the views of Max Weber on religion and its connection with social economy. Then, the possible connection of merchants and Buddhism will be discussed to highlight Buddhist ethics of giving and commodity economy. By this kind of study based on Buddhist literature, it is hoped that we may have a better understanding of the economic development of Buddhism both in the past and at present.
